Understanding Intellectual Property Before defining intellectual property, it is useful to first understand the term intellectual. An intellectual relates to the capacity for logical reasoning , critical thinking , and deep understanding. It may also describe a well-educated individual who enjoys engaging in thoughtful and analytical pursuits. Intellectual property (IP), in legal terms, refers to ideas, designs, inventions, or creative works that are protected by law from unauthorized copying or exploitation. Intellectual property rights safeguard the products of human imagination and innovation. Creators and inventors are often individuals who perceive problems and systems differently from the average person.
