Understanding Intellectual Property Before defining intellectual property, it is useful to first understand the term intellectual. An intellectual relates to the capacity for logical reasoning , critical thinking , and deep understanding. It may also describe a well-educated individual who enjoys engaging in thoughtful and analytical pursuits. Intellectual property (IP), in legal terms, refers to ideas, designs, inventions, or creative works that are protected by law from unauthorized copying or exploitation. Differentiation: market segmentation allows the development of differential marketing strategies . By breaking a market into its constituent subsegments a company may differentiate its offerings between segments (if it chooses to target more than one segment), and within each segment it can differentiate its offering from the competition. By creating a differential advantage over the competition, a company is giving the customer a reason to buy from them rather than the competition.   Opportunities and threats: market segmentation is useful when attempting to spot opportunities and threats .
